The Gut~Brain
Connection
The Mad Charlie Inc. community understands the importance of the gut-brain connection. There is no denying the microbiome connection to our physical AND mental health. They call the gut our second brain for a reason! Our gut is responsible for producing a multitude of important hormones that are responsible for processes like the detection of nutrients, how well we’re able to digest our food, the modulation of insulin, and MOOD! That’s right! There are key hormones produced in our gut that are important regulators of anxiety and depression. As a matter of fact, The gut provides approximately 95% of total body serotonin, most of which exists in plasma. Although serotonin has intrinsic roles in the intestines and peripheral metabolism, it is capable of locally activating afferent nerve endings that are connected directly to the central nerve system. You can read more about this HERE, as well as a multitude of papers published by the National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine.
Neurodivergent people have a tendency to suffer higher rates of GI issues. Issues such as stomach aches, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, IBS, and IBD. All of these share a common link… INFLAMMATION. Studies have shown that inflammation in the gut exacerbates mood dysregulation, sensory sensitivities, learning delays… and the list goes on. We must look at what is happening in the gut just as much as we are focusing on the brain. We must reduce and eliminate as much inflammation as possible so that we are all able to feel our best and be the best version of ourselves!
